The winters are long in Maine, and by February we are all looking for a diversion from shoveling snow. Our first Feature Auction of 2013 will be just the thing to rid you of those winter blues. We have handpicked some exceptional items that will be of interest to all including a collection of mid-century modern furniture, fine antique carpets, exquisite estate jewelry, period 18th & 19th c. furniture, important artwork, and early oriental jade.
Sale NotesAmerican and European artists' Sir John Lavery, J. E. Buttersworth, William Burpee, Martin Johnson Heade, Samuel Badger and Maurice Prendergast are included in the 60 lots of exceptional artwork on Day One. Among the finest of American furniture you'll find a circa 1790 Chippendale chest, Connecticut 18th c. chest of drawers, mahogany Chippendale tall clock, circa 1800 Hepplewhite sideboard, and a set of 6 Massachusetts 18th c. Chippendale carved chairs. Four rare 18th c. maps by Henri Abraham and Mattheus Seutter will be offered. An Etruscan period fibula highlights a fine selection of antiquities. Early 20th c. estate antique carpets including Isfahan, Sarouk, Kashan, Southwest Caucasus, and Heriz are a few of the 40 being offered this day. Important Chinese artwork includes an ancient Chinese scroll painting (1056 - 1063), an 18th c. Chinese narrative scroll painting, plus paintings by Qi Baishi, Shen Chou, Wang-Chi Yuan, Huang Binhong and Li Kuchan. There are also fine examples of Chinese jade, bronze and porcelain. Early silver is represented by a large George III period Tea Urn, a pair of candlesticks hallmarked London 1762 by Ebenezer Coker, and an 18th c. Philadelphia tankard by Joseph & Nathaniel Richardson. Civil War and Native American artifacts, six tall case clocks and a nice selection of nautical items featuring a 19th c. figurehead will all be offered this day.
