Description: HEPPLEWHITE BOWED SLANT-FRONT DESK. Probably Worcester County, Massachusetts, ca. 1800. Mahogany and cherry with pine secondary wood. Bow-front form with four graduated drawers resting on a shaped skirt and French feet. Crossbanded inlay on the drawers and a satinwood diamond on the fallboard. The interior has three over five drawers over seven cubbyholes, three of which have drawers. Descended in the Sawyer family of Hudson and Bolton, Massachusetts. Retains an older finish with good color, minor imperfections. 44 1/2"h. 39"w. 19 1/2"d. 30 1/2" Writing height.

Description: MARYLAND SAMPLER. Ca. 1837. Silk on linen. Signed "Catherine Hauser Aged 10 years" followed by sentimental verse over double-chimney brick or stone house and large basket of flowers. Worked sets of the alphabet and numbers. The whole surrounded on three sides by strawberry border. According to accompanying history, Catherine was born in December of 1827 and married Thomas Henry Vansant. The 1860 census lists the family as all being Maryland born and living in Baltimore. Minor imperfections. 17" x 17". Modern frame.

Large peafowl, one perched on striped heart, the other on what appears to be a flattened cornucopia. Framed inscription, religious verse and set of alphabets all enclosed in black sawtooth inner border. Loosely crafted wide floral border. Bottom of sampler appears unfinished. Minor thread breaks and small hole. Modern frame. 19"h. 17 1/2"w.
