Colorful needlework includes a black figure of a man wearing what appears to be a turban, basket of flowers and a table and two chairs. Initialed "H. G.".as well as "SG, KG, NG, and SG". Description: MASSACHUSETTS SAMPLER. Silk on linen. Made by "Amanda Jacob / Born July the 18 1789 / Aged 11 Years 1800". Alphabets and numbers worked in pink, blue and yellow over a verse reading " when I am gone and here no more / This I shall leave behind / Then for my friends to look upon / And bear me in their mind". Amanda was born in Hanover, Plymouth County Massachusetts to David Jacob[s] and Hannah Hersey Jacob[s]. She became Galen James's second wife in 1833.They are listed in the Massachusett's 1870 census, he as a retired ship builder, living in Medford. A few thread losses in ground. In modern 14" x 15" frame. 11 1/2"w. 12 1/4"h.

Rows of alphabets and numbers worked blue silk on linen and the verse "Virtue alone is Happinefs [sp] below". Caty,or Catherine as listed in historical records, was the 2nd of 6 children born to Jesse Davenport (1761-1839) and Hannah Crane Davenport (1765-?) of Stoughton, Norfolk County Massachusetts. Canton is less then10 miles north of Stoughton and where Caty may have attended school. Slight stain. 8 1/2"w. 10 1/2"h. In modern frame 15"w. 17"h.
