Lot 5: American School 20th Century (i) A Lake Shore (ii) A Rutted Path through Fields (iii) Old Bridge, Grez-sur-Loin

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: American School 19th Century (i) A Lake Shore Oil on canvas 10 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches (ii) A Rutted Path through Fields Oil on canvas 10 1/2 x 14 5/8 inches (iii) Old Bridge, Grez-sur-Loing, France Oil on canvas 10 7/8 x 14 1/2 inches Provenance: William Thorne Descent to private collection Private collection, New York These three paintings came from a private collection consisting of a signed watercolor by Irving R. Wiles. The image of the bridge depicts the old stone bridge over the Loing River in Grez-sur-Loing, a village situated about seventy kilometers from Paris, on the outskirts of the Fontainebleau Forest. The town was at its height of popularity as an artists' colony in the late 1870s and 1880s, drawing scores of American, British, and Scandinavian artists. The Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson joined the early contingent of artists in the 1870s, which included the Americans, Birge Harrison, Will Hicox Low, Willard Metcalf, Walter Launt Palmer, Theodore Robinson, and the expatriate John Singer Sargent. Other American artists frequented Grez in the next decade, including Kenyon Cox, Bruce Crane, Francis Chadwick, Alexander Harrison, and Edward Simmons. While only the bridge painting can be identified as a view of Grez, the three paintings in this lot are in the mode of what was known as the"grey school of Grez School," including a limited tonal palette influenced by the art of the French painter, Jules Bastien-Lepage, low perspectives leading to uptilted picture planes, and diffused atmospheric light conditions.
