Lot 201: CARVED KNIGHT AND HORSE.

Description: CARVED KNIGHT AND HORSE. Attributed to Florence, Italy, late 15th century. Two life-size figures of pieced wooden construction featuring pegged butterflies covered with layers of gesso and paint. Nobleman wearing Gothic armor once held a lance. His palfrey has drilled holes for a bit. Wear and some repair. Horse is 16 hands high. 87"h. 76"w. 53"d. overall. Purchased from French & Co., New York, in 1960.
Condition Report: One eye on horse replaced. Paint is most likely early 20th century with areas of flaking and gesso loss. Numerous butterfly joints. Description: ROBE OF WINTER BY ARTHUR MELTZER (PENNSYLVANIA, 1893-1989). Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Snowy Pennsylvania landscape with woods, hills, and a stone house. 42"h. 46"w., in a gilt frame, 47 1/2"h. 51"w. Sold to benefit the Columbus Museum of Art. Provenance: Columbus Museum of Art (Ohio), gift of General Edward Orton, Jr. (1863-1932), Talfourd P. Linn, Frederick W. Schumacher, Orlando A. Miller & John R. Gobey in 1928. Exhibited: National Academy of Design, the 3rd Annual Philadelphia Art Week Association, Art Institute of Chicago (1925), and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1925); retains labels from each of these exhibtions on verso; evidence of two additional labels, now lacking.
Condition Report: Canvas: not lined. Stretcher: original with cross brace. Paint: thick and thin in spots (technique, not a condition issue), 1 spot with very minor craquelure, generally very dirty with scattered spots of thicker varnish. Frame: probably original, partial label reads "Royal Art Framing Inc." (incorporated in NY in 1919), moderate separation in the upper left corner, minor separation and later brace (on back) in lower right corner, original gilt surface with some wear; has plaque on front indicating that the painting won a Fellowship Prize at the 1925 PAFA exhibition. About the donors: Orton, Sr was president of OSU. Orton Jr was dean of the College of Engineering at OSU and he founded the American Ceramic Society. He founded the Ceramics program at OSU. He also founded the Orton library in memory of his father. Frederick W. Schumacher was, of course, donated one of the founding collections at the Museum. Orlando Miller also donated over the years. John R. Gobey bequeathed several fine American paintings to the Museum. This was Talfourd P. Linn's only art contribution.
