Sale Notes:
This auction offers a large number of scarce and rare books including a sizeable collection of antique titles dealing with Pennsylvania history. There are original editions of a number of rare county histories, historical sketches, genealogies, colonial records, and accounts of various communities. Prime examples are Strassburger's three-volume "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" (1934), a first edition of "An Historical Account of the Rise, Progress, and Present State of Canal Navigation in Pennsylvania" (1795), an original edition of "Letters from the British Settlement in Pennsylvania" (1819) and a rare edition of "An Examination of Connecticut Claims to Lands in Pennsylvania" (1774). Present in this group as well are a number of scarce Civil War titles such as "Perry's Saints or the Fighting Parson's Regiment in the War of Rebellion" (1886), "Sabre Strokes of the Pennsylvania Dragoon" (1884), "History of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps" (1865) and "Martial Deeds of Pennsylvania" (1875).
In addition, we are continuing to work through a single collection of rare antique books dating back to the 16th century. These are often well-preserved texts works of historical significance. Among the subjects present are ancient philosophy, theology, geography contain, history and literature in Latin and Greek, as well as a substantial quantity of Arabic titles, both in the original and in translations into modern European languages. Included in this select group is Carsten Niebuhr's "Travels through Arabia, and Other Countries in the East" (1792), Silvestre de Sacy's two-volume "Les Seances de Hariri" (1847 / 1853), and a most uncommon first edition of his 1829 "Anthologie Grammaticale Arabe."
Also present in this auction is a rare early edition of "The Religious Experience of Norris Stearns" (1820), an account of a religious vision that is believed to have significantly influenced the formulation of Mormon founder Joseph Smith's "First Vision."
Also featured in this auction is a hard-to-find history of the Cornell rowing team entitled "The Cornell Navy" (1907), with an inscription to Judge Frank Irvine.
Other highlights are to be found in a group of select early and first editions by and on Winston Churchill, including original editions of his history of the First World War, "World Crisis" (1924-1931) and of his panegyric biography of his ancestor John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.
