Sale Notes:
This auction will offer a wide selection of highly desirable rare books and antique bookcases. Among the items on the block are a group of antique books accompanied by original signed letters by the authors, including American artist Rockwell Kent, British sexologist Havelock Ellis and utopian fiction writer Morrison I Swift. Additional offerings include a number of author-inscribed first editions from the likes of Theodore Dreiser, B L Farjeon, Gertrude Atherton and woodcut artist Gwendolen Raverat. We are also pleased to present a rare first American edition of Albert Einstein's "Relativity."
In addition, there will be a number of rare editions and first printings from many literary greats including three hard-to-find volumes by Virginia Woolf, a first edition of "The Voyage Out", her first novel which featured the debut of the character Mrs. Dalloway, who would become the focus of one of Woolf's most beloved novels, A rare early edition of "Monday or Tuesday", her only collection of short stories with a very uncommon dustjacket and a first edition of "To the Lighthouse" with a very rare dustjacket featuring art by Woolf's sister, Vanessa Bell. Two rare printings by James Joyce as well as a most scarce first edition of George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" will be included in this catalog. Other highlights include a first edition of Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper", a rarely printing of the 1901 revised edition of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and more from Andre Gide, Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad, Jack London and others.
Also featured in this auction is a sizeable collection of antique titles dealing with Connecticut history. There are original editions of a number of rare county histories, historical sketches, genealogies and accounts of various communities. Prime examples are "Standard's History of Bridgeport" (1897), "Biographical Record of Fairfield County" (1899) and "The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor" (1891) by Henry R Stiles.
This auction also features a selection of antique bookcases in a variety of woods, styles and sizes including stacking sectionals, glass-fronted pieces and rotating racks. Complementary to these lots, we will be offering several groups of vintage and antique bookends with various themes.
