Sale Notes:

National Book Auctions will hold an auction of antique and rare books, ephemera and minted medallions on Sunday, July 12. Among the genres included are the fields of astronautics, exonumia, model ships and railroads, children's literature and Civil War history. The auction consists of 370 lots from various estates.

The historical works in this catalogue include the Civil War diary of Asaph Dodge, an officer who served in the 6th Regiment, New York State Volunteer Infantry. His diary provides eyewitness accounts of battles and life on the front during the first years of the war. Other highlights from/on this historical period include Greeley's "American Conflict" (1864-66), the "Memoirs of Stonewall Jackson" (1895), Jefferson Davis' 1881 history of the Confederacy and a number of regimental histories as well as a hand-written Masonic code book owned by a Civil War soldier.

This sale offers a number of uncommon titles related to space exploration. Among the titles in this group are both scholarly studies and official government/commission reports, including a rare five volume set on the Challenger accident. A number of volumes relate to missions to the moon and to Mars, as well as to the Soviet space program (with books in both English and Russian).

Other highlights in this auction come from the field of exonumia (study of numismatic items other than currency) and a number of medals and medallions, both domestic and foreign, will be sold.

A selection of titles relating to modeling (both trains and ships) will appear, including the scarce reference work "Wonderful Models" (1928) in two volumes.

Among the antique titles in this auction, these early works on modern technological development should be noted: the two-volume "Instructions for Testing of Telegraph Lines" (1879) and "Reports on the Committee on Electrical Standards" (1873).

Similarly rare antique titles are the theological title "Memoir of H. Obookiah" from 1860, a most uncommon first US edition of the Gothic novel "Mary Schweidler the Amber Witch" (1845). A particularly scarce and famous literary title will also be offered: a first printing of "The Great Gatsby".

This auction will also provide another opportunity to acquire rare World War I posters, as well as scarce titles from the "Fruits of New York" series.

Other highlights in this auction are very uncommon elements of ephemera, as well as a number of heirloom-quality antique bookcases.
