Sale Notes:
We will hold an auction of antique and rare titles in fields such as Modern Literature, Ephemera, Art and others, on Sunday, December 6.
This auction will offer a large number of scarce, signed first and limited editions. Among the authors whose signed books will be auctioned are A. A. Milne, Willa Cather, and Hilda Dolittle. Of particular note is the presence in this auction of a rare copy of a great classic of modernist literature: an early printing of James Joyce's "Ulysses " in original wrappers.
An equally select group of a single author's work will be on sale in this auction: a large number of works by or on Beatrix Potter from a select private collection. These include a unique 1906 first printing of "The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit" and an equally rare "Peter Rabbit's Almanac for 1939". Among the other items from this estate are a number of scarce figurines representing characters from the author's work. Also included is a complete 1921 "Peter Rabbit's Race" board game.
Artwork being offered in this auction includes Chinese folk woodcuts in an elaborately bound folio, color lithographs, photogravures, oil paintings, and watercolors.
Also featured in this auction are a large number of antique U. S. newspapers, with several dating back to the early years of the Republic, with letters from the first presidents of the United States. These are well-preserved pieces with important historical content. A work of particular historical significance in this collection of periodicals is a rare set of two parliamentary acts from England dating to the 17th century. A similarly hard-to-find English title is gun maker William Greener's "The Gun" (1835).
Other hard-to-find groups of ephemera from the fields of advertising, tourism, industry, transportation and history will be on sale, as will a very large number of antique and vintage post cards. This particular group will be complemented by a number of lots containing scarce antique photographs, including a significant quantity of tintypes and cabinet cards.
Other highlights are to be found in a select group of select rare books such as a first printing of W. M Haulsee's memorial "Soldiers of the Great War" (1920), William Thompson Howell's "The Hudson Highlands" (1933) , also in two volumes, Edward S. Ellis' "The Indian Wars in the United States..." (1892). In addition, there are antique sets by such canonical writers as Twain, Conrad, Cervantes.
