Description: SULLIVAN JOHN L.: (1858-1918) American Boxer, recognised as the first World Heavyweight Champion 1881-92. An unusual vintage gentleman's shirt collar, with label of maker's Whitehill & Bigelow, inscribed in dark fountain pen ink by Sullivan, 'Compliments of John L Sullivan to whoever gets the collar, March 3 - 1907, To stop arguments, Size 21 inches'. With extensive staining and age wear, lightly affecting the writing. Professionally mounted on black alongside a bold pencil signature by Sullivan ('John L Sullivan's compliments, Boston, Mass,') on a white card and also alongside four different reproduction images of Sullivan in various poses.
