Our 34th San Francisco poster sale will be held on November 3, 2012. The auction features 406 poster lots related to Travel & Sports, Advertising, Art, Design & Culture, Jazz, Film, Work Incentive and Military & Propaganda.
The sale will begin with 96 ADVERTISING posters from the 1890s through the 1960s, followed by a small selection of posters related to FILM, RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE, ENTERTAINMENT and MODERN DESIGN (incl. several hand-signed works by Max Bill), CULTURAL EVENTS and JAZZ. A group of 1920s MATHER WORK INCENTIVE posters precedes a collection of European and American MILITARY & PROPAGANDA posters from the 1910s to the 1950s. The sale concludes with a beautiful collection of 125 TRAVEL, SPORTS & TOURISM posters.
The most prominent auction highlight is a heretofore unknown German 1-sheet poster for the expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (lot 97). This is the first time that a German sheet has ever been offered for sale. Other auction highlights include Jules Cheret's " Cacao Lhara - F. Mugnier" (lot 2), Leonetto Cappiello's "Bitter Campari" in the large version (lot 7), A.M Cassandre's 1925 Art Deco classic "Reglisse Florent" (11), Ludwig Hohlwein's 1909 poster "Terranova" (51), a stunning Austrian 3-sheet for the film Ben Hur (103), a group of 4 Rosta Windows poster by Vladimir Mayakowski (233), " the American World War II classic "This Is The Enemy" by Karl Koehler & Victor & Ancona (261), Jean Carlu's " Pour le Désarmement " (232) and " America´s Answer - Production" (266), and Roger Broders' " Vichy - Ses Sources" (324).
