POLITICAL ILLINOIS BANNER AND GAR SHELF CLOCK.

Lot 391: POLITICAL ILLINOIS BANNER AND GAR SHELF CLOCK.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: POLITICAL ILLINOIS BANNER AND GAR SHELF CLOCK. American, 1867, paint on canvas. State seal of Illinois with motto reversed to read "Nation Union" "State Sovereignty". Attached to original wood pole. 56"h. 47"w. And a small clock in a hand carved mixed wood frame inscribed "3rd NJ Volunteers US 1898". Decorated with eagle clutching a US flag, four-leaf clover and a drum. Retains grungy old finish. Some imperfections. 6.5"h. 7"w. Shortly after the Civil War in January 1867, Illinois Secretary of State, Sharon Tynedale proposed revamping the state seal including reversing the order of the motto " State Sovereignty National Union" to the version seen on this banner. In March of that year , the State Legislature approved the new design but retained the original order of the motto. This banner may have been made as an prototype of Tynedale's version.

We provide condition information when it is requested by a potential bidder, as a part of our dedication to excellent customer service. However, the absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections, repairs, restorations or the effects of aging.
