Sale Notes:
September 19, 2010 Two Sessions: 11:30am & 2pm Fine Chinese Paintings,Ceramics, Bronzes and Works of Art Featuring one of the most prominent and creative calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, Huang Tingjian, an excerpt of his Pine Pavilion Script Calligraphy will be offered during the first session of the auction (Traditional Paintings) as Lot 32. Earlier in 2010, in China, Huang's calligraphy set a new record for the auction price of a single item. Another renowned artist, Tang Yin, is represented by Lot 36. This painting was sold by Hong Kong Auctions HK in April 2003 for a princely sum. The Chinese appreciate jade not only for its beauty, but also for its symbolism of purity, good luck, and protection. Today, jade is also a symbol of status and luxury. The art of carving jade dates back centuries and remains an important part of Chinese heritage. In the second session of the auction (Fine Ceramics and Works of Art), the jade collection includes functional items like a Brushpot and Holder and decorative objects such as a Ruyi scepter in lingzhi form, Jadeite Cabbage (similar to the one in the Taipei Palace Museum), pendants, sculptures of deities, flowers and animals, a Hanging Panel with an inscribed poem from Emperor Qianlong, Scholar objects gifted from his Empress, and a celadon Jade Minotaur chariot. The auction will also present the Yuan Porcelain collection from an important New York Collection, Sai Yang Tang. The Yuan Dynasty, founded by Genghis Khan, included parts of Persia and its revered blue and white and copper-red ceramics. The pottery kilns at Jingdezheng perfected the technique of firing the cobalt and copper-oxide glazes, and produced some of the vibrant and exquisitely crafted porcelain objects presented from Lot 220-229. The rarest survivor of the Yuan Dynasty porcelain objects is Lot 223, "An Overglazed Wave Patterns Yuhuchunping," and Lot 226, "A Copper Red Twin Linked Vase," crafted by the most talented potters of that period. Only very few such objects remain, including one found in the Tokyo Museum. Color Bi-lingual Catalogues can be purchased by calling (212) 867-7288. $30 plus postage (45 Domestic, $15 International)
