Mabel May Woodward Biography
(b Providence, Rhode Island, 1877; d Providence, Rhode Island, 1945) American Painter. Mabel May Woodward attended the Rhode Island School of Design and then the Art Students’ League in New York. Though she lived in Providence for most of her life she also regularly summered in Ogunquit, Maine and was very active in the art communities of both cities. She was greatly influenced by the work of the impressionists and cited William Merritt Chase and Frank Du Mond as particularly informative to her style. She is most well known for her beach scenes, which often prominently feature groups of children and families enjoying the fine weather. Woodward spent many years as a faculty member at the Rhode Island School of design and was the first woman ever elected president of the Providence Art Club.
