Fritz Winter Biography
(b Altenbögge, Westphalia, 22 Sept 1905; d Herrsching, nr Munich, 1 Oct 1976). German painter. A self-taught artist, he began to paint c. 1924. Before becoming a student at the Dessau Bauhaus, he worked as a miner and as an electrician. He began by studying theatre but turned to painting in 1929, studying under Oskar Schlemmer, and also Kandinsky and Klee, who were both influential on his artistic ambitions and theory. His abstract pictures of this time reveal a debt to these artists, as well as the influence of Arp and Naum Gabo.
