Franz Wiegele Biography
(b Nötsch, Kärnten, 23 Feb 1887; d Nötsch, 17 Dec 1944). Austrian painter. After training as a smith he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna from 1907 to 1911 and, as a member of the Neukunstgruppe, he was involved in the 1911 exhibition in Hagenbund. With the help of Klimt and Carl Moll he was able to travel to Paris, the Netherlands and Algiers in the following years. He was interned by the French in Algiers at the start of World War I and handed over to the Swiss in 1917 in an exchange of prisoners. From 1925 onwards he lived in Nötsch, where he was one of the founders of the Nötsch School with his brother-in-law Anton Kolig. He declined a professorship at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna in 1936. He was killed during a bombing raid on Nötsch.
