George Watson Biography
(b nr Greenlaw, Borders, 1767; d Edinburgh, 24 Aug 1837). Scottish painter. He was taught by Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh and in the studio of Joshua Reynolds in London before 1787, after which he established himself as a professional portrait painter in Edinburgh. During the next 40 years he painted over a hundred portraits; a large number of these remain unrecorded in family hands although many were also engraved. He also produced some figure subjects, such as A Young Female Artist (1813; Dunrobin Castle, Highland).
