Jeff Wall Biography
(b Vancouver, Canada,1946) Contemporary Canadian photographer. Wall received his MA in art history from the University of British Columbia in 1970. He then moved to London for his postgraduate studies at the Courtlauld Institute of Art (1970 – 1973). In 1978, Wall displayed The Destroyed Room. This photograph marks his signature style of large-scale staged photographs mounted on light boxes. Referencing historical paintings, the cinema, and writers such as Kafka, Wall’s work is deeply rooted in his art history and academic background. His photographs are connected to Vancouver’s photoconceptualism of the 70’s, a movement that challenged the use of photography as representation. In 2002, Wall received the Hasslebald Foundation International Award in Photography. Wall lives and works in Vancouver.
