Wolf Vostell Biography

(b Leverkusen, nr Cologne, 14 Oct 1932; d Berlin, 3 April 1998). German painter, sculptor, décollagist, video artist and performance artist. He studied typography and lithography from 1950 to 1954 in Cologne and Wuppertal and painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1955–7) and at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf (1957–8). Much of his early work centred on décollage , a word that he found in the newspaper Le Figaro (6 Sept 1954), where it described the simultaneous take-off and crash of an airliner. Like certain artists associated with Nouveau Réalisme he made recourse to the technique of that name (see DÉCOLLAGE) in works such as Coca Cola (1961; Cologne, Mus. Ludwig), but he also explored the term’s dialectical implications of destruction and creation; by emphasizing the syllabic division of dé-coll/age, he underscored the destruction and recombination of material through time.
