Guillaume Vogels Biography
(b Brussels, 9 June 1836; d Ixelles [now in Brussels], 9 Jan 1896). Belgian painter. He first worked as a house painter, running his own painting and decorating business from 1855 on. Although he was essentially self-taught, he appears to have been influenced by Périclès Pantazis, whom he employed in his business. He began exhibiting his work in 1874, and in 1878 he joined the group La Chrysalide; he was a founder-member of Les XX (see > VINGT> , LES), later took part in La Libre Esthétique and exhibited regularly in the Cercle Artistique and in 1881 at the Salon in Paris. Vogels was particularly indebted to the work of landscape painters working in Tervuren, near Brussels, such as Hippolyte Boulenger, and he used a broad technique similar to that of Louis Artan but even more daring; many of his paintings were executed not with brushes but with a palette knife. Foul Weather (exh. 1885; Brussels, Musées Royaux B.-A.) is an outstanding example of his direct, free and spontaneous use of paint to represent landscape and effects of light, which influenced the early work of James Ensor and anticipated such 20th-century styles as Fauvism and Tachism.
