He
first
worked
as
a
house
painter,
running
his
own
painting
and
decorating
business
from
1855
on.
Although
he
was
essentially
self-taught,
he
appears
to
have
been
influenced
by
Périclès
Pantazis,
whom
he
employed
in
his
business.
He
began
exhibiting
his
work
in
1874,
and
in
1878
he
joined
the
group
La
Chrysalide;
he
was
a
founder-member
of
Les
