SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL
Salomon van Ruysdael Biography
(b Naarden, nr Amsterdam, ?160003; d Haarlem, bur 3 Nov 1670). Dutch painter. He is best known for his atmospheric, almost monochromatic, river scenes, painted in the 1630s during the tonal phase of Dutch art. His work in this genre is very close in style to that of Jan van Goyen, and their paintings have often been confused. Towards the end of his career, van Ruysdaels work took on a more classicizing styleperhaps influenced by that of his famous nephew JACOB VAN RUISDAEL. Salomons son Jacob Salomonsz. Ruysdael (c . 162981) was also a landscape artist and much influenced by his cousin, as can be seen from the Waterfall by a Cottage in a Hilly Landscape (London, N.G.). Jacob Salomonsz. was working in Amsterdam by 1666, but died insane in the Haarlem workhouse.
