(b Eleusis, 19 Aug 1914; d Athens, 26 Jan 1965). Greek painter, stage designer and architect. He studied architecture at the National Technical University in Athens (1931–6). From 1937 to 1939 he worked as an architect. During the second world war he joined the Greek army, serving first in Greece and later in the Middle East. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death for his participation in the Middle East coup, but was pardoned in 1945–6. He moved to Brazil in 1947, where he worked with the architects Oscar Niemeyer, Lúcio Costa and Palumbo on the plans of Brasília; in the same year he worked in Paris on the development of St Cloud. From 1948 to 1961 he lived in Paris, where he painted and made stage designs and costumes (1948–55) for the theatre founded by him and his wife Christine, a leading actress of the avant-garde. In 1953 he had his first one-man show at the Studio Facchetti in Paris; this was followed by others, notably at the Galerie Iris Clert (1956). Between 1961 and 1965 he was mostly in Greece and exhibited in Athens, for example at the Zygos Gallery in 1963. Despite his association with the Ecole de Paris his painting defies classification. Its earlier phase shares the gestures and application of Action Painting, using intense colour in abstract compositions. A marked preference for dynamic and emotionally charged flowers, where the paint is also applied directly from the tube with movements of the whole body, is notable after 1955 and may be interpreted as a move towards the ‘New Figuration’.  (hide)
