Janos Mattis Teutsch Biography
(b brasov, 13 aug 1884; d brasov, 17 march 1960). hungarian painter, printmaker, wood-carver, sculptor and writer. he studied at the school of craft and design in budapest (19012), and at the akademie der bildenden künste in munich (19025). in 19068 he lived in paris, carving picture frames. as a painter and printmaker he was influenced by the work of matisse, cézanne, van gogh, munch and gauguin, as well as by german expressionism. he was preoccupied with the force of colour and the effect of one colour on another. in his oil paintings, watercolours and linocuts he strove to express the emotions he experienced through landscape (e.g. bright landscape , oil on canvas, 1916; pécs, pannonius mus.), but he did not go as far as kandinsky towards total abstraction. he was associated with various avant-garde groups, including the activists, the ma group, and der sturm in berlin, and he had numerous one-man shows in europe. his soul flowers paintings of 191624 (e.g. stylized flower , c . 1921; budapest, mus. f.a.) contrasts the calm of the horizontal and the energy of the vertical with cold and warm colours and convex and concave forms, in order to explore compositional and dynamic rhythmic possibilities. he also made painted clay and wood sculptures (e.g. composition with two figures , painted wood, h. 340 mm, 1921; budapest, mus. f.a.). in 1923 he became an active member of the romanian avant-garde, and in 1925 he started working for the periodical integral . his work began to show a stronger structural order and a more objective symbolic world. the human figure dominates the maquettes he made in middle age. from 1928 to 1931 he spent his summers at the nagybÁnya colony. in his theoretical writings he revealed a similar artistic vision to that of klee and kandinsky; these were published under the title kunstideologie (1931). he advocated an expressionist musicality and a lyrical abstraction. between 1930 and 1940 he designed murals (unexecuted) on the themes of work and motherhood. during world war ii he gave up working, but between 1945 and 1948 he began a realistic period with surrealist elements; his work in the early 1950s became more realist in accordance with the official cultural policy of the period.
