Istvan Szonyi Biography

(b budapest, 17 jan 1894; d zebegény, 31 aug 1960). hungarian painter and printmaker. he was a leading figure in the hungarian post-impressionist ‘nagybánya school’, and later in the gresham group. he studied at the academy of fine art in budapest (1913) and spent the following summer in the nagybÁnya colony, where he was taught by károly ferenczy. he fought in world war i, but in the summers of 1917 and 1918 he again studied at nagybánya. in 1919 he returned to the college of fine art, where he was a pupil of istván réti. his early works painted in nagybánya were influenced by the eight (iii) and by the expressive constructivism of the activists, primarily the works of béla uitz.
