Carl Steffeck Biography
(b Berlin, 4 April 1818; d Königsberg, E. Prussia [now Kaliningrad, Russia], 11 July 1890). German painter. He trained from 1837 at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, where he studied with Franz Krüger and Carl Begas (i). He spent the winter of 183940 in Paris, where he worked with Paul Delaroche. He travelled in Italy between 1840 and 1842 and settled in Berlin, where he produced historical paintings and portraits, but his landscape and animal paintings were more successful. His paintings of horses, such as Mare with Foal (1877, Berlin, Staatl. Museen, N.G.), and dogs were based on close observation of the animals natural behaviour. He often painted smaller pictures of horses and dogs from life in one sitting. He became a professor at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin in 1859; in 1880 he became Director of the Akademie der Künste in Königsberg. Max Liebermann and Hans von Marées were among his pupils.
