Sir Stanley Spencer Biography
(b Cookham, Berkshire, England 1891; d Cliveden 1959) British painter. The Surrealist painter Sir Stanley Spencer was influenced by both World War I and World War II. Spencer studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1908 to 1912, at which point he began to exhibit his work. His experiences as a medical volunteer in the First World War, from 1915 to 1918, especially impacted his paintings. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1938 and a retrospective exhibition was held at the Tate Gallery in London in 1955. Spencer was knighted in 1959, the year that he died.
