Biography: Sanchez

(b Aguada de Pasajeros, Las Villas, Cuba, 1948) Cuban Painter. Tomas Sanchez studied at the San Alejandro School of Plastic and Arts (1964-1966) and received his BA from the National School of Art in 1971. Sanchez is known for his detailed landscapes, which he began to create in the 1970’s. These images more closely resemble photographs than acrylic paintings. In the 1980’s, Sanchez began to replace his fanciful nature images with desolate landfills. In these works, he makes a statement about man’s destruction of nature. Sanchez’s landscapes have won him numerous awards, including the Joan Miro International Award in Drawing (1980) and the National Painting Award at the Biennal de la Habana, Cuba (1984). Sanchez currently lives and works in Miami, Florida.
