Anton Rooskens Biography
(b Griendtsveen, 16 March 1906; d Amsterdam, 28 Feb 1976). Dutch painter. He was a self-taught artist and in his spare time painted copies from Old Master works, and from nature, which were influenced by van Goghs Brabant period. In 1935 he moved to Amsterdam, where he worked as an electrical engineer and instrument-making teacher. In 1938 Rooskens visited Constant Permeke in Jabbeke. After World War II he discovered Black and Native North American art, which became a source of inspiration for his work. In 1946 he painted an ode to primitive man, Sun People (priv. col., see Stokvis, p. 67). His work was also influenced by Georges Braque and Henri Matisse.
