He studied painting in Guadalajara, and in 1914 he settled briefly in Mexico City before going on in the same year to Europe. He studied in Madrid and Paris until 1921 and developed an interest in avant-garde art. On his return in 1928 he began a long career as a painter and teacher. His paintings, in which his skilful draughtsmanship was evident, helped revive interest in the popular arts of the Jalisco region through his depictions of masks and the pottery of Tonalá. Classical and expressionistic influences fluctuated, with cool shades of blue, grey and green predominating. His Expressionism bordered on Surrealism in paintings of lonely women tormented by neuroses (e.g. On the Balcony , 1950; Mexico City, Mus. A. Mod.), and there are Cubist elements in his Self-portrait (1956; priv. col., see Nelcen, fig. 86). Orozco Romero also painted highly original landscapes (e.g. Mountains of Jalisco , 1981; Mexico City, Acad. A.).  (hide)
