Johan Rohde Biography
(b Randers, 1 Nov 1856; d Hellerup, 18 Feb 1935). Danish painter and designer. He studied at the Kongelige Akademi for de Skønne Kunster, Copenhagen, in 18812; having helped to found the Kunstnernes Studieskoler (Free Art Schools) in Copenhagen, he continued his studies there under Peder Severin Krøyer and Laurits Regner Tuxen in 18837. His travels to Paris and the Netherlands in 1889 and 1892, the second trip also including Italy, were of great importance to his development. He was a keen admirer of contemporary European artistic trends, from Pre-Raphaelitism to Impressionism and Symbolism. As a friend of the members of the Nabis, he was influenced by Maurice Denis, as is seen in the strong outlines and melancholy mood of Late Evening at the Pier of Hoorn (1893; Copenhagen, Hirschsprungske Saml.). In 1891 Rohde founded the Frie Udstilling (Free Exhibition) in Copenhagen in opposition to the Academy exhibitions at Charlottenborg, and in 1893 he organized a show of about 70 paintings by Gauguin and van Gogh. Despite introducing modern French art to the Danish public and picking up elements of various styles, he remained primarily a Naturalist, avoiding such extremes as Art Nouveau and tempering his work with classicism. This is most obvious in his designs for applied art, such as furniture, and especially in the silverware that he produced with GEORG JENSEN.
