Randolph Rogers Biography

(b Waterloo, NY, 6 July 1825; d Rome, 15 Jan 1892). American sculptor. He travelled to New York in 1847 to pursue a career in magazine illustration and ultimately found employment in a dry-goods store. His employers discovered his aptitude for carving and promptly financed his trip to Florence in 1848 for formal training. He studied with Lorenzo Bartolini until 1850, when he settled in Rome. The poignant gesture and beseeching gaze of the kneeling figure in his first work, Ruth Gleaning (marble, 1855; Detroit, MI, Inst. A.), instantly appealed to popular taste. He sustained this success with his sensational Nydia, the Blind Girl of Pompeii (version, 1859; New York, Met.). Inspired by Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel The Last Days of Pompeii (1834), Rogers modelled a pathetic blind girl who rushes desperately through the ruined city. Although he capitalized on the sentimental subject, he also created a work that demanded skilful marble carving; he received nearly one hundred requests for duplicates of this masterpiece.
