(b. 1923, Montreal, Canada; d. 2002, Ile Aux Grues, Canada) Canadian artist. Jean-Paul Riopelle began as a landscape painter at an early age. Riopelle studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1943-44 and had his first solo exhibition in 1945. It was around this time that Riopelle turned away from traditional painting conventions and began to experiment with non-figurative painting and improvisation. (b. 1923, Montreal, Canada; d. 2002, Ile Aux Grues, Canada) Canadian artist. Jean-Paul Riopelle began as a landscape painter at an early age. Riopelle studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1943-44 and had his first solo exhibition in 1945. It was around this time that Riopelle turned away from traditional painting conventions and began to experiment with non-figurative painting and improvisation. In 1946, Riopelle took part in the first Automatist Exhibition in Montreal. The Automatist group, led by Paul-Emile Borduas, was a group of progressive writers and artists living in Quebec. The following year, Riopelle helped to organize an Automatist Exhibition at the Galerie de Luxembourg in Paris, and then moved to the city in 1947. In Paris, he worked primarily in a tachiste style. After 1956, Riopelle began to paint larger images and loosen his brushstroke. It was also during these later years that he re-introduced hints of the landscape painting of his youth back into his work. Riopelle was a leader in the modern Canadian art movement and received the Order of Canada in 1969. Riopelle returned to his home country during the 1990s and passed away on March 12, 2002.  (hide)
