Biography
(b. 1923, Montreal, Canada; d. 2002, Ile Aux Grues, Canada) Canadian artist. Jean-Paul Riopelle began as a landscape painter at an early age. Riopelle studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal from 1943-44 and had his first solo exhibition in 1945. It was around this time that Riopelle turned away from traditional painting conventions and began to experiment with non-figurative painting and improvisation.
