Rembrandt Biography
(b Leiden, Netherlands, 1606; d Amsterdam, 1669) Dutch painter and engraver. Rembrandt served as an apprentice in his early years in Leiden and Amsterdam. His early work predominately featured self-portraits and studies of light and shadows. In 1631 he moved to Amsterdam, becoming a popular portrait painter as well as a teacher. The following year he created one of his most famous works, Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, and began to pursue his interest in biblical and mythological subjects. After completing the largest, and most controversial, painting of his career, The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq (known as The Night Watch) in 1634, commissions for his portraits began to decline. Rembrandt then concentrated on his self-taught talent in etching before he applied for bankruptcy in 1656. His late works primarily consist of lively depictions of biblical subjects and self-portraits depicted through a different treatment of light than his previous pieces. Rembrandt is known for his finely tuned observation and rendering of life and the human figure.
