William Ratcliffe Biography
(b Churchwater, nr Kings Lynn, 6 Oct 1870; d London, 6 Jan 1955). English painter. He attended evening classes in design at Manchester School of Art under Walter Crane, and from 1894 worked for 12 years in London as a wallpaper designer. Ratcliffe moved to Letchworth in 1906 (where he probably worked as a commercial artist for a printing company) and there he met Harold Gilman in 1908 who encouraged him to resume painting. He moved back to London in 1910, where he studied part-time for one term at the Slade School of Art, and was introduced by Gilman to the Saturday afternoon gatherings at 19 Fitzroy Street.
