Vaclav Rabas Biography
(b krusovice, nr rakovník, 13 nov 1885; d prague, 26 oct 1954). czech painter, graphic artist and sculptor. he studied at the prague academy of fine arts, in 19069 under bohumír roubalík (18451928), vlaho bukovac and hanus schwaiger, and in 191113 under max svabinsky. he was a member of the fine arts section of the artistic forum (umelecká beseda) in prague from 1909, and he later became chairman for several years. he exhibited regularly with the forum from 1910. he was a founding member of the hollar association of graphic artists (sdruzeni grafiku hollar). he made study trips to italy (1912, 1924) and paris (1913), and he had numerous exhibitions in czechoslovakia. predominantly a landscape painter, in his youth he more frequently painted figure compositions. his early work, largely academic, was influenced by impressionism. in the 1920s, inspired by cézanne and derain, rabas adopted a less descriptive, more personal, stylized manner, with subdued colours. he concentrated on themes expressing the simple everyday realities of the czech countryside (e.g. krusovice i , 191920; prague, n.g., trade fair pal.), concerned in particular with spirituality and fertility. his landscapes are characterized by terse, austere brushstrokes accenting the dramatic (e.g. an everyday motif , 1929; prague, n.g., trade fair pal.). in the early 1930s he extended his range of earthy colours. his later works were almost allegorical (e.g. the cycle of 24 paintings bread , 1939; prague, n.g., trade fair pal.) and were lyrical and contemplative. his final works, however, adapted to the ideological demands of the times and often do not extend beyond a superficial description of the subject. he produced two woodcut cycles of six, for mother and czech heads , and also worked in etching (e.g. the sower) and drypoint (e.g. harvest). his sculptures include the sower (h. 400 mm, 1917; prague, n.g., zbraslav castle) and the bronze mothers head (h. 230 mm, 1924; prague, n.g., zbraslav castle)
