Fernand Piet Biography

(b Paris, France 1869; d Paris 1942) French painter. Fernand Piet is known for his Gauguin-like depictions of Breton women. Influenced by the bohemian artistic world of the Montmartre area of Paris in the late 1890's, Piet met Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and began painting scenes of café life. Piet studied under Fernand Cormon at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1893 he joined the Salon des Artistes Francais, and in 1921 joined the Salon des Independents. He was financially successful throughout lifetime and received a medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition for his work.
