Sheldon Peck Biography

(b Cornwall, VT, 26 Aug 1797; d Babcock Grove [now Lombard], IL, 19 March 1868). American painter. A self-taught painter, he used his family as subjects in his early works, employing dark colours against flat backgrounds. After moving to Jordan, NY, in 1828 he used brighter colours and included more detail. He continued to paint on panel, almost always making half-length portraits characterized by such features as a broad brow, a wide, intense stare from detailed eyes and the use of a decorative brushstroke—a long stroke with a shorter one on each side, as seen for example on the shawl in A Miss Dodge Wearing a Tortoiseshell Comb (c. 1840; Pollack priv. col., see Miller, p. 614). About 1845 the family moved to Babcock Grove (now Lombard), IL, a farming community near Chicago. Peck then switched to canvas and introduced full-length figures, occasionally in groups. His colours brightened, and he sometimes added trompe l’oeil wood-grained frames to his portraits. Often he included such props as a newspaper or added a still-life or landscape view in the background (e.g. David Crane and Catherine Stolp Crane , c. 1845; priv. col., see Balazs, p. 279) but continued to portray the figure as immobile, painted in flat, brightly coloured planes. He did not sign his paintings and always advertised himself as a decorative painter who would embellish chairs and furniture.
