Walter Launt Palmer Biography
(b Albany, New York 1854; d Albany 1932) American painter. Walter Launt Palmer was the son of the sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, thus he received an early exposure to art. In 1870 Palmer began taking lessons from Frederic Edwin Church, and in 1972, when he was only 18, Palmer’s work was accepted by the National Academy of Design for an exhibition. Palmer studied in Paris until 1876. It was during his time in Paris that Palmer’s work became influenced by Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. Palmer is particularly known for his winter landscapes with their emphasis on light and ambiance. In 1887 Palmer was awarded the Hallgarten prize from the National Academy of Design which recognized his “outstanding” work at only the age of thirty three. Palmer exhibited widely, with shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design, among others.
