Chana Orloff Biography
(b Konstantinovka, Ukraine, 12 July 1888; d Tel Aviv, 18 Dec 1968). French sculptor of Ukrainian birth. Her family emigrated to Palestine in 1905, and in 1910 she settled in Paris, where she attended drawing classes at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs and studied sculpture at the Académie Russe (1911). She became an important member of the ECOLE DE PARIS. In 1913 she exhibited for the first time at the Salon dAutomne and did so regularly thereafter; she also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Tuileries. Orloff favoured wood as a medium, making sculptures such as Amazon (1916; untraced; see Gamzu and others, pl. 19), although she also worked in stone, marble and bronze; portraits, mother and child groups, nudes and animals were her main subjects. Although influenced to some extent by Cubism, Modigliani and the vogue for the primitive, she soon established a distinctive idiom: essentially naturalistic but tending to a decorative simplification of form and a love of smooth, rounded surfaces.
