Felipe Orlando Biography
(b Tenosique, Tabasco, 1911). Cuban painter, teacher and writer, active in Mexico. He lived in Cuba from 1914 to 1946, and then in New York before settling in Mexico City in 1951. Orlando exhibited widely in the USA and Europe. In his semi-abstract figures, still-lifes and landscapes, texture was an important element. In this aspect he was clearly influenced by the work of Rufino Tamayo and Jean Dubuffet. He also wrote fiction and lectured on the Cuban philosopher and political theorist José Martí, as well as on art, ecology and Afro-Cuban culture.
