Yoshitomo Nara Biography
(b. Hirosaki, Japan, 1959) Japanese painter and sculptor. Nara received his B.F.A. (1985) and M.F.A. (1987) from the Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music. From 1988 to 1993, He studied at the Kunstakademie Dussledorf, in Dusseldorf, Germany. He gained international attention as part of several popular group exhibitions, most notably Superflat (Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, 2000). His works are deceptively simply, child-like drawings and sculptures of children and animals. Both innocent and mischievous, Yoshitomo’s subjects possess a self-awareness that has made his art popular internationally. Raised in post-World War II Japan in a rural part of the Aomori Prefecture by working parents, he spent much of his childhood alone, and cites the imagination this solitary childhood fostered as one of his main influences. His works often quote images from both the American and Japanese popular culture he witnessed on television as a child. Nara has had nearly 40 solo exhibitions since 1984.
