Nagy István 1873-1937 Portrait of a Man, 1929
Istvan Nagy Biography
(b csikmindszent, 28 march 1873; d baja, 13 feb 1937). hungarian painter and draughtsman. he studied in kolozsvár (now cluj-napoca, romania) and then at the budapest school of design (18958) under bertalan székely; he continued his studies at the akademie der bildenden künste in munich under franz von lenbach and l. herrterich. after briefly attending the académie julian in paris, he went on a study trip to italy. he worked in transylvania (190320), painting local landscape and people in muted colours, ignoring current artistic trends. from 1905 his work became more dramatic, and he tended to use pastels and charcoal rather than oils, as in fiume landscape (1911; budapest, priv. col.). during world war i he worked as a war artist on the galician and italian fronts, depicting the human aspects of the conflict. his portraits, especially drawings of his mother (1918; budapest, priv. col.), evoke profound love. in 1920 he began to paint the villages and pastoral life of the hungarian plains. he worked at first with józsef koszta in szentes, but although both artists are associated with the genre of great plains painting, they remained isolated figures. in 1923 a one-man show of his work from this period was held at the national salon in budapest. in 1924 he painted beside lake balaton and met józsef egry. his representations made monumental events of the everyday, revealing his self-discipline, expressive spirituality and sensitivity to the countryside. he was interested in the structure of painting, and his organization of space and perspective was influenced by hungarian folk art. apart from still-lifes and portraits he depicted mainly mountainous landscapes, sometimes including animals. his most successful works were done in blue and yellow pastels (e.g. landscape in winter , 1927; budapest, n.g.). in the late 1920s he painted in yugoslavia and finally settled in baja. his figures became increasingly abstract with time; he returned to portraiture in his later years to support himself.
