Frederick Morgan Biography

(born 17 May 1847 London, England; died 1927) English painter. Frederick Morgan was a genre painter who painted idyllic and romanticized narratives that greatly appealed to Victorian tastes. His father John Morgan was a painter himself; at fourteen years old Morgan left school and went to train with his father in his studio. He trained at the Edinburgh Academy as well. Despite exhibiting works at the Royal Academy during the early 1870s, his father stopped supporting Morgan and his mother disapproved of his risky artistic pursuits. Unable to find work elsewhere, Morgan returned home and found work painting portraits for clients dissatisfied with their photographs at a photography firm. Morgan believed this work, with its high expectations and attention to detail, helped better prepare him to succeed as an artist and as a result he returned to London where the art dealer Messrs. Agnew & Son hired him. Paintings mostly consisting of children and families imbued with conservative Victorian social conventions, Morgan’s work was reproduced into prints and became popular particularly among the British middle class. During the nineteenth century the wealth of the middle class grew greatly and thus they were able to spend money on once unattainable luxuries including art. Morgan’s work was also used in advertisements, reaching an even wider audience. His work remained popular among the upper classes as well, his most famous patron being Queen Alexandra for whom he painted a portrait of her with her grandchildren and pet dogs.
