Biography: Moilliet

(b Berne, 6 Oct 1880; d Vevey, 24 Aug 1962). Swiss painter. While at school in Berne he met the young Klee, who was to become a close friend. In 1898 he began work as a decorative painter in Berne and in 1900 studied drawing under the German sculptor Ferdinand Huttenlocher (b 1859). From 1901 to 1903 he was at the artists’ colony of Worpswede in northern Germany, working with Fritz Mackensen, and during this time also studied under the German painter Hans Olde (1855–1917) in Weimar. In 1904 he studied at the Akademie in Stuttgart under Leopold Kalckreuth before travelling to Paris with Klee and Hand Bloesch in 1905. From 1907 to 1909 he travelled widely, visiting Rome, Tunisia, Corsica and France and in 1909 first met August Macke. He spent the winter of 1910–11 with Klee in Munich and in 1911 became acquainted with Kandinsky and Franz Marc. He took part in the first Herbstsalon in Berlin in 1913, and many of his works of this period were inspired by circus and cabaret life, as in In the Variété (1913; Berne, Kstmus.). In 1914 he accompanied Klee and Macke on their famous trip to Tunisia. After the mid-1910s watercolour became his dominant medium and remained so thereafter.
