LUCIA MOHOLY (1894-1989)
Lucia Moholy Biography
(b Prague, 18 Jan 1894; d Zurich-Zollikerberg, 17 May 1989). British photographer, writer and teacher of Bohemian birth. She took up photography in Germany in 1922, assisting her husband, LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY, with his theoretical formulations and photographic experiments. At the Bauhaus (19238), her stark analytical records of products, buildings and people epitomized Neue Sachlichkeit (e.g. Georg Muche , 1927; San Francisco, CA, MOMA). Many were reproduced in Bauhaus books, which she sub-edited. She trained as a professional photographer in Weimar (19234) and Leipzig (19256), before practising and teaching in Berlin (192833) and London (19349). Her book, A Hundred Years of Photography, 18391939 (Harmondsworth, 1939), and leadership in international microfilming schemes by the Association of Special Libraries and Information Bureaux (Aslib) and UNESCO (194259) highlighted her concern with the social consequences of new techniques.
