Borge Mogensen Biography

(b Ålborg, 13 april 1914; d gentofte, 5 oct 1972). danish designer. after finishing his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in 1934, he studied in copenhagen at the kunsthåndværkerskole (1936–8) and the furniture school of the kunstakademi (1938–41) under kaare klint, who exerted a great influence on his approach to furniture-making. as head of the furniture design studio (1942–50) of the fællesforeningen for danmarks brugsforeninger (danish cooperative wholesale society), mogensen designed several lines that broke new ground for danish industrial furniture production. as the range was intended for an average family, the furniture needed to be simple, practical, durable and cheap. in 1950 mogensen established his own design studio. in the mid-1950s he developed the ‘boligens byggeskabe’ (residential cupboard units) system and the unit furniture series ‘oresund’ (sound) in collaboration with grethe meyer (b 1918). the dimensions were based on extensive research and analysis, and the unit systems therefore continued klint’s functional experiments.
