painter,
draughtsman,
graphic
artist,
writer
and
teacher.
He
was
born
into
a
middle-class
Jewish
family
during
the
late
Wilhelmine
period,
and
his
parents
wanted
him
to
pursue
a
profession
more
practical
than
an
artistic
one.
Nonetheless,
while
apprenticed
to
a
bricklayer
in
1901,
Meidner
produced
highly
accomplished
pen-and-ink
drawings.
Their
imagery
reveals
his
attempts
to
align
his
Jewish
heritage
with
that
