Biography

(b Haydon Bridge, Northumb., 19 July 1789; d Douglas, Isle of Man, 17 Feb 1854). English painter and printmaker. Known as ‘Mad Martin’, he was one of England’s most significant 19th-century painters of sublimely Romantic themes. Many of his canvases are extremely large in scale, which enhances their tremendous visual impact. He often made prints, notably mezzotints, from his paintings.
