Jock MacDonald Biography
(b Thurso, Highland, 31 May 1897; d Toronto, Ont., 3 Dec 1960). Canadian painter and teacher of Scottish birth. He graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 1922. He was employed as a designer and educator in England and was appointed head of design at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Art in 1926. His early landscapes were strongly influenced by the style of the Group of Seven. Although he painted landscapes and continued to draw inspiration from nature throughout his life, he is best known as a pioneer in the development of abstract painting in Canada.
