RICHARD PAUL LOHSE 1902-1988
Richard Paul Lohse Biography
(b Zurich, 13 Sept 1902; d Zurich, 1988). Swiss painter, draughtsman, printmaker and writer. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich from 1920 to 1924 while also working in an advertising studio from 1922 to 1927. He began painting landscapes and still-lifes under the influence of late Cubism in 19256 and in 1940 produced his first drawings of diagonal, vertical and horizontal structures. These led to paintings such as Transformation of Four Identical Figures (1942; Basle, Kstmus.), which were influenced by Constructivism in their use of diagonals and groups of shapes ranged on a flatly painted background. During this period Lohse was very active as a poster designer and as a vigorous promoter of the avant-garde: in 1933 he met Paul Klee and a number of other leading artists; in 1937 he co-founded the Allianz Vereinigung Moderner Schweizer Künstler with Leo Leuppi (18931972); he joined the Schweizerischer Werkbund in 1942; and he contributed to the Abstrakt/Konkret review in 19445.
